From research prototype to
AI-enabled clinical innovation in radiotherapy patient positioning
AIDDA B.V. is a University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) spin-out developing ProtonShot, a dose-guided patient positioning software for radiotherapy.
Radiotherapy treats more than half of cancer patients, yet workflows remain constrained by manual and time-consuming processes. In proton therapy, patient positioning alone can take up to 15 minutes per session, limiting treatment capacity and increasing operational costs.
ProtonShot addresses this bottleneck by combining fast Monte Carlo dose simulations with AI-driven optimization to determine the optimal treatment position from daily imaging, enabling automated patient setup in approximately five minutes.
The technology has been developed and validated at UMCG, reaching Technology Readiness Level 4. AIDDA is now transitioning from a research prototype to a regulation-ready medical software product and is raising a seed round to fund the development of its first MVP, clinical validation with early partners, and preparation for initial market entry in proton therapy, with a clear path to expansion into the broader photon radiotherapy market.
